Day 4

Subject: Watch your (body) language, [firstname]!

Hi [firstname],

Have you ever watched a politician talking on TV and known instinctively that he or she is lying? Oftentimes it's because their body language is sending out a different message to the one they're actually saying. You see, every move a leader makes is evaluated (consciously or subconsciously) by those they want to influence. So if your body language is not consistent with your verbal cues, listeners see a disconnect and are less likely to trust what you say.

To be an influential leader, and maintain your credibility, it's vital that you keep your body language consistent with your verbal language.

It's also a good idea to use body language to show that you are open and approachable. For example, influential leaders tend to stand in an open stance when speaking and listening. This neutral position gives others access to their space and demonstrates confidence in the message. If you stand with your arms crossed or speak with uncontrolled mannerisms, others will regard you as being defensive and question the credibility of what you're saying.

The most influential leaders use a relaxed body language to exude confidence (they use this to back up what they are saying) – even if inwardly they have doubts.

For example, I recently discovered that General Eisenhower had grave doubts about D-Day. Privately he feared it would all go wrong. His fears were well founded – in 1942 Operation Jubilee, more commonly referred to as the Dieppe Raid and widely regarded as a rehearsal for D-Day had been a disaster. The casualty rate was an astonishing 68% and thousands were killed, wounded or taken prisoner.

D-Day could easily have gone the same way. Eisenhower even had a letter prepared to send to President Roosevelt where he was going to say “… If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.” Yet when you see him on newsreels from the time his body language is confident – like success was a forgone conclusion.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
